Programmatic SEO is a method that generates a large number of web pages from a single template, each targeting a specific keyword, rather than writing every page one by one. The principle has been around on the web for a long time — Tripadvisor and Zapier have used it for years — but its application to e-commerce is still recent. A simple definition

Programmatic SEO relies on two ingredients: a reusable page template, and a set of structured data that varies from one page to the next. The template defines the structure — a title, sections, a layout — and the data fills that template with different information each time: a city, an app name, a product category. The result is a family of pages that share the same structure but each answer a distinct query.

This is an important distinction to make up front: programmatic SEO is not a synonym for "content written en masse by an AI." It can work entirely without text generation — a purely structural template, filled with raw data (name, price, specifications), is already enough to produce useful pages. AI writing is an option to dress some of those pages with more developed text, not a requirement for doing programmatic SEO.

The principle is nothing new, either: real-estate listing sites have published a "Apartments for rent in [city]" page for every city where they have listings for years, and price comparison sites a page for each product category crossed with each brand. What changes with the rise of e-commerce and dedicated tools is the accessibility of the method: it no longer requires a technical team to build the page system, just a catalog and a list of keywords.

Two well-known examples: Tripadvisor and Zapier

Tripadvisor has illustrated the principle for a long time: every destination on the site has a "Hotels in [city]" page and a "Restaurants in [city]" page, built from the same template and fed by its database of businesses, reviews and ratings. On an online store, the structured database already exists: it's the product catalog. Programmatic SEO is not without risks, and they are directly tied to its strength: the ability to produce many pages quickly can also produce many weak pages quickly. Two pitfalls come up every time:

  • Thin pages — when the dataset doesn't contain enough for a given entry (too few products, too few reviews, too little real content), the generated page offers nothing more than an empty template. Better not to create the page than to publish hollow content.
  • Duplicates between generated pages — two dataset entries too close to each other (two phrasings of the same keyword, two overlapping catalog segments) produce two pages that compete instead of complementing each other.

Both pitfalls call for the same discipline: a minimum quality threshold before generating a page, and a check that each new entry doesn't overlap with an already-existing page.
